Using PC/laptop onboard sound card can be done! No question.
Question would be; 'would you want to'?
Answer; 'most probably not'
The quality is not going to be sufficient to seriously participate in a music session. For testing however it is perfectly fine.
I have an 'onboard gear' profile on both a MBP and two very different W10 machines which I use for testing purposes and aiding other jammers to get online.
Again, for participating in making music online, an external(in most cases) audio interface/sound card is strongly recommended.
