It appears that 'true' p2p is no longer an option in JamKazam, which IMHO would be a shame. (working very successfully before with just 'local' band members here)

I confirm. Changing the preferred network path before entering a session still results in the JK reporting ARS. It's unclear if just the JK popup is wrong and it always says ARS or if stated preference has no effect. In any case it is not 100%.
