My latest experience:
A friend (A) who lives close by, can connect with me usually very well ~ 20ms total latency, decent audio.
Another friend (B) over a thousand miles away, can connect with friend (A), usually with acceptable quality.
Friend (B) and I cannot get audio from each other.
Over the weekend we had a session where friend (A) could hear everyone, but friend (B) and I could only hear friend (A). Friend (A) was leading the session, so friend (B) and I followed along, unable to hear each other. Friend (A) said it was mostly in sync, and sounded OK. I made a recording of my mix.
When I played back the recording, I heard all 3 musicians, but no one was in sync! Friend (B) and I were almost in sync, but we were way behind friend (A). Keep in mind, friend (B) and I have never been able to hear each other in real time. Friend (A) and I have only rarely had a "no audio" situation.
How this issue could be caused by home router or interface configuration is beyond me. I think the problem between me and friend (B) is internet routing and latency (never below 63 ms) - but that doesn't explain why friend (A) is able to connect with (B). (A) and I are using the same ISP & ping times between us are never above 17ms.
