Lot's of variables here. Could be your input setup. In Windows $ft+Ctl+M brings up the power mixer. You can see how hot is your input. Power mixer has a wealth of info and control.

Once you have the file you can play with it in a audio file utility such as Audacity, which is free. You can increase the gain, add effects, edit, etc. Everyone should have Audacity if you play with audio.
